EUROPEAN TRAFFIC INFORMATION BACKBONE: THE DATEX LESSON

This paper develops the vision of a European traffic information backbone as the principal means for the flow of all data relevant for traffic and travel information between content providers, traffic information centres (TICs) and service providers. The availability of detailed, high quality real time data is a crucial success criteria for providers of new telematics services like dynamic route guidance, pre-trip and multimodal route planning. Therefore, the demand rises for international standards for language independent exchange of traffic information. The major current European initiative in this field is the standardisation of the DATEX specifications. In this paper, the authors describe their lessons learned with the development and deployment of DATEX as a means for cross border data exchange as well as an interface between TICs and service provider systems.
