Purpose – This column aims to focus on the obsolescence of technology, and the problems associated with the archiving, storage and retrieval of data.Design/methodology/approach – The column takes the form of a viewpoint paper.Findings – All technology is susceptible to obsolescence, meaning that information can be lost due to changes in hardware and software. A book or printed photograph created today may have a greater chance of still existing and being accessible in 2060 than the more advanced digital file or photo.Originality/value – The column provides food for thought on issues of archiving, data storage and retrieval, and the growth in the quantity of information available.
