INVESTIGATION REVEALS THE INTERFACE IS NOT THE BEST PLACE FOR GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCEMENT

Model test results and finite element analysis of strip footings on geosynthetic-reinforced layered soil deposits are presented. A design theory is formulated as well. The soil deposits consisted of a strong layer of granular material. The importance of knowing the depth of both layers is emphasized. This information is necessary to select the best position to place the geosynthetic reinforcement to increase the footing's ultimate bearing capacity and reduce its settlement. An example of the research application is provided.
