Economic Impact of Public Transportation Investment

This report examines the ways in which public transportation investment impacts the economy, especially in terms of business income, wages, and employment. It explores how supporting public transportation operations, construction and manufacturing increases income from these activities; and creates immediate jobs - and all of this is the result of spending money on public transportation. It also looks at the longer-range effects of public transportation investments, which have an impact on productivity and economic efficiency. The latter benefits stem from changes in costs, access, and travel times, which are consequences of public transportation investments.
