Abstract A technique of pattern processing implemented by microprogram control and stored recognition logic is described. This system has high flexibility to accommodate an almost unlimited variability of handwritten character shapes and has direct linkage with backup computer simulation. Handwritten mail reader-sorters using this technique have been in use since 1967. More than ten machines are now installed in major post offices throughout Japan.
