Cytology of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of thyroid

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm of thyroid (MECT). Cytomorphologically, it is diagnosed by the presence of epidermoid cells and mucous cells. However, the diagnosis is often challenging owing to its rarity and association with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We describe a case of MECT in a 46-year-old lady that was diagnosed as PTC in cytology. Histologically, this case showed predominantly solid epidermoid areas with only focal presence of mucous cells.
