Expert Systems in Civil Engineering

The importance of expert systems, also referred to as knowledge based expert systems, has been growing in all areas of civil engineering practice. The papers in this book were presented at the first symposium on expert systems in civil engineering. Some of the papers describe the definitions and characteristics of expert systems. Extensive research and application areas are also covered. Some applications of expert systems include safety evaluation, construction management decision making, risk analysis and scheduling. Various applications to design, modeling, structural analysis, and seismic analysis are also described. Hazardous waste site characterization and hazardous waste incineration are evaluated with expert systems. The application of an expert system to flood forecasting is also described.
