A method for fault section identification in High voltage direct current transmission lines using one End measurements

Abstract To identify the section of fault in line commutated converter based high voltage direct current transmission lines, a new technique has been proposed in this work. The proposed technique depends on extraction of rectifier end current signal of the transmission line. Three separate fuzzy inference system modules have been proposed to carry out the protection tasks. First fuzzy module detects the faults both in AC and DC section. The second fuzzy module discriminates the section of the fault. The third fuzzy module identifies fault pole and classifies it. The advantage of the proposed method include 100% reach setting, fault detection time is less than one cycle, require no communication links. Besides, the protection scheme covers and discriminates the grounding fault with fault resistance up to 500Ω. With all the above mentioned advantages, the proposed fuzzy based method can be used efficiently for fault section identification in HVDC transmission lines.
