Investigation of Cylinder Planing on a Flat Free Surface

The hydrodynamic characteristics of a cylinder planing on a flat free-surface are investigated by carrying out a set of experiments and numerical simulations in which Froude number, cylinder draft, and cylinder trim angle are systematically varied. Comparisons between experimental measurements of loads and flow appearance with the numerical predictions were made and show quantitative agreement. The experiments were carried out at the Davidson Laboratory High-Speed towing tank facility at Stevens Institute of Technology. The simulations of cylinder planing were performed using a RANS-based finite-volume solver with a volume-of-fluid based free-surface interfacecapturing homogeneous free-surface model.
