Transmission with a wide gear ratio and three interconnected planetary gear sets

The family of transmissions has several members that can be used in powertrains to provide at least eight forward gears and one reverse gear. The transmission family members include three planetary gear sets with seven torque transmitting mechanisms and three fixed links. The powertrain includes an engine and torque converter, which is continuously connected with at least one of the planetary, and an output member which is continuously connected with another of the planetary gear. The seven torque-transmitting mechanisms provide connections between various gear members, the drive shaft, the output shaft and the transmission housing and ready to be operated in combinations of two to establish at least eight forward gears and at least one reverse speed.
