A review of structure mechanics aspects of fusion blankets

Abstract Blanket design approaches for fusion reactors have been examined in light of structural analysis requirements. The special nature of most fusion blankets requires that no through cracks, no matter how small, develop in the first wall during the blanket lifetime. The state-of-the-art of structural methods for creep-fatigue interaction and fracture mechanics behavior at elevated temperatures and high fluences have been examined. Recommendations are made for the required development needs in order to assure reliable structural based life prediction methods for future blanket systems.
