The embryonic development of Hyas araneus L. (Decapoda, majidae): Effects of temperature

Abstract The embryonic development of Hyas araneus L. (Decapoda, Majidae): Effects of temperature. - The pattern of the embryogenesis in H. araneus was investigated by incubation experiments at different temperature regimes (6° C, 12° C, and unregulated flow-through-temperature), field observations, and separate vitro incubation. The duration of the embryonic development was found to be strongly affected by the incubation temperature during early development. Dependent on the temperature during cleavage the occurrence of a one or two year developmental pattern is postulated, with a threshold temperature between 6° C and 12° C. if exposure to different temperatures began during the gastrula phase, conspicuously different patterns of further embryogenesis were not observed. Nevertheless, the final part of the embryonic development and the hatching process are suggested to require low temperatures.
