Software Sensors in Bioindustry: Asymptotic and Interval Observers for State Estimation

The present work addresses the design and implementation of asymptotic observers and interval observers for a class of nonlinear bioprocesses. More precisely, a systematic design procedure for asymptotic and interval observers is derived. The algorithms and the flow diagrams of the design procedures are provided. Also, an illustrative example of a wastewater treatment bioprocess is considered in order to validate and to compare the proposed software sensors. Computer simulations are achieved in the Matlab programming environment. The proposed estimation algorithms are useful for biosystem control design, with direct applicability to bioindustry, medicine, as well as wastewater treatment.
