Analysis on crippling force of column reinforced with CFRP and hinged at two ends

In structural design, critical force is one of the important factors affecting the structure stability. In order to evaluate the influence of reinforcement with CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced polymer) on crippling force, the crippling force of column reinforced with CFRP and hinged at two ends was computed with the energy method. The results show that Euler critical force increases after retrofit on all conditions, and the maximum increase is 1.643%.The increase of the crippling force is roughly proportional to the decrease of the slender ratio. It is suggested that the stability enhancement for the member of large slender ratio is more obvious than that for the member of small slenderness ratio.Under the same slenderness ratio, the reinforcement with CFRP on both ends enhanced the crippling force the most, while the reinforcement on other parts, including the top,the bottom and the middle resulted in the same lower level enhancement, which showed that the reinforcement with CFRP can increase the critical compression force and stability of columns.
