Similarity of personality variables as predictors of marital satisfaction: A Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) item analysis

Abstract An MMPI item analysis was conducted to determine the correlation of similar-complementary spousal responding at the item level with marital satisfaction. Eighty-one married couples were tested on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Scale (LWMAS). Pearson product correlations revealed that similarity and complementarity of spousal responses for 55 items on the MMPI were significantly correlated at the 0.01 level with marital satisfaction. Results suggest that spousal personality congruence at the item level on the MMPI is a reliable predictor of marital satisfaction.
