Radiant Heating from a Cylindrical Fire Column

Abstract The radiant heat flux from a cylindrical flame to an elemental surface area is formulated in terms of a shape factor, emittance and the blackbody emissive power. The expression for the emittance is presented in an approximate form containing the mean beam length, which is shown to be convenient for treatment of a small-particle suspension in a participating gas medium. The predicted results from this approximate formulation agree well with available experimental data on pool fires and exact numerical calculations.
