The use of man’s adaptive characteristics as a controller has a long history of providing a cost-effective method of increasing system reliabiity, from well before the Wright brothers’ first flights to the present day aviation and space missions. The basic technology was a primary limitation in earlier times but is less of a constraint now, and consideration must be given to such items as operator motivation and job satisfaction as well as performance and reliability.
