The paper describes an approach to comprehensive analysis of traction electric drive. The drivetrain of ED74 electric unit equipped with four inverter-fed induction motors was modeled in Matlab/Simulink. The model consists of functional blocks as: motors, inverters, drive controllers, filters. Structure and operation of the model was described. chosen simulation results were presented and discussed. Tw o methods of modeling the inverter were presented. complex method take int o account voltage modulation process. It’s useful for observation of high frequency components of the waveforms. Second method, which needs much less computation time, assumes constant inverter voltage output during single modulation period. It’s useful for simulation of long time cases. The comprehensive model enables complex analysis of performance of electric unit. Influence of drive parameters and controllers settings on unit performance can be tracked. Quantities which are difficult t o measure in target unit can be easily recorded via simulation. The model can be used t o choose drive control algorithm and adjustment of regulators’ constants.
