This papers deals with grammaticality judgments and their u se as evidence in linguistic theory. Based on a review of the recent literature on linguistic judg ments and their elicitation, the theoretical significance of judgment data is discussed, and an ov erview of the relevant experimental findings is provided. A number of linguistic and non-linguis tic factors that bias grammaticality judgments are identified, and the the use of experimental methods for eliciting more reliable judgment data is advocated. A shorter version of this paper will appear in the Journal of Logic, Language and Information.
