IVHS AND THE OLDER DRIVER

Advanced traffic systems such as ATMS and ATIS, while of great benefit to drivers generally, could be a double-edged sword for the elderly. The use of new technologies to deliver information to the driver can increase the amount of information needed to be processed, raising the demands of the driving task and creating problems for older drivers resulting from their mental and physical limitations. This paper presents an overview of the components of the driving task as affected by the aging process and identifies areas where IVHS, and in particular ATMS and ATIS, should take into account the needs of older drivers as the technologies are being developed.
