Electronic wave functions VIII. A calculation of the ground states Na+, Ne and F-

The wave functions and energies of the ground states of Na+, Ne and F- have been calculated using the variational method applied to a linear combination of Slater determinants. The wave functions are probably more accurate than any others previously reported for these ions. Some innovations in the method of calculation have been examined and have provided interesting empirical experience. The expansions of the relevant Schrodinger matrix elements are derived. This is the first time that a conyergent method of calculation has been applied to systems of such complexity.
