Effects of Web-Based Multimedia Homework with Immediate Rich Feedback on Student Learning in General Chemistry

Continuing developments in computer technology, and specifically technology of the World Wide Web, have the potential to improve instruction in many different subjects, including chemistry. We have developed a series of Web-based homework and tutorial programs implemented through WebCT that are designed to help students gain a better understanding of chemistry. This project has two major instructional goals: to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and to provide a resource to help students focus their study efforts. The system is designed to structure students' studying and make the student responsible for doing the work necessary for success. This approach allowed the instructor to give graded homework assignments with feedback without having to invest the considerable time typically required in grading homework assignments.
