Even if social work has proved a promiscuous suitor and inconstant mistress, the history of alliances between social work and psychology is venerable. Social work has flirted with, lovingly embraced, become married to and finally divorced itself from various branches of psychology in its time. Nevertheless, these shifting alliances have had certain characteristics in common. They have been similar in form and, to some extent, in content.
