Prevalence of DNA in vehicles: Linking an item away from a vehicle to occupancy of the vehicle

Abstract To assist our understanding of DNA transfer, persistence, prevalence and recovery (DNA-TPPR), this study investigates the extent to which DNA from a car is picked up by a temporary driver and transferred to items touched after leaving the car. The study investigates recovery of DNA from handprints left by a temporary driver on glass plates and from car keys used by the temporary driver. The study found that DNA can be transferred from surfaces within a car to locations beyond the car by a temporary driver. A temporary driver’s DNA and regular driver’s DNA may be recovered from keys left away from a car after use by a temporary driver.
