Underlining and Notetaking: Some Suggestions from Research.

Underlining At the center of most underlining research is the Von Restorff effect, a laboratory finding that the isolation of an item against a homogeneous background produces increased recall of that item. If, for example, one word is printed in a different color midway in a list of words, and if recall of that word is higher than recall of the other words in the list, the Von Restorff effect is said to be operative. Leicht and Cashen (1971) sought to discover if the Von Restorff effect
