A bottom-up approach to the planning of underground space

In the search for more space in urban areas, utilisation of underground space is often seen as the only remaining solution. Given the many benefits it offers to life on the surface, use of underground space is deemed to be sustainable. In this paper the author will argue that without considering the natural resources and life present in the subsurface, a balanced decision to go underground can not be taken. Based on current research and findings he goes on to examine planning instruments which can be used for the dialogue between all parties involved to reach a long term viable and therefore sustainable solution. In conclusion it will be shown that a multi-dimensional approach to land planning could lead to innovative solutions for the use of underground space.
