A One-Dimensional Constitutive Model for Shape Memory Alloys

This paper describes a constitutive model for the one-dimensional analysis of shape memory alloys. The model can treat thermal loads, mechanical loads, residual stresses and the temperature and phase change dependence of the material properties. Unique features of the model include phase change hardening, hysteresis with partial transformations and tensioncompression transformations. The model differentiates between stress induced and temperature induced transformation strains and introduces the importance of accounting for the tensioncompression phase change history. The paper discusses these features and presents several analytical predictions.
