On the need for pragmatics in the study of nominal compounding

Abstract It is argued that reference to pragmatic information is required if a syntactically adequate description of nominal compounding is to be produced. Some of the kinds of pragmatic information that are required are listed. It is claimed that not all such information can be listed in the lexicon.
