Worsening renal function after transcatheter aortic valve replacement: Infrequent but deleterious

• A significant proportion of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD). • Approximately 15% of patients with CKD develop worsening renal function at 3–6 months after TAVR. Worsening renal function at 3–6 months is independently associated with long-term mortality. • Acute kidney injury (AKI) and peri-procedural blood transfusion of ≥4 units are independently associated with worsening renal function at 3–6 months. Incorporating strategies to mitigate the hazards of AKI and major bleeding in this high-risk cohort is imperative.
