Management Options for Mitigating Natural Resource Training Impacts on Army Installations

Abstract : As land uses and the condition of natural resources change, military natural resource managers are constantly confronted with new land management problems. They spend considerable time and resources trying to identify ways to minimize military impacts to soil and vegetation. This report serves as a checklist of management actions that can streamline the decision-making process and increase the likelihood that managers will consider the full range of alternative actions. The five basic management techniques are: (1) limit total use; (2) redistribute use; (3) modify kinds of uses; (4) alter the behavior of use; and (5) manipulate the natural resources for increased durability. Several alternative actions that can be taken for each of these techniques are outlined and discussed.
