A controlled clinical trial of rice and glycine-containing oral rehydration solution in acute diarrhoea in children.

In a controlled trial carried out in 2 groups of Indian children aged between 3 months and 5 years suffering from actue diarrheal dehydration the study group received rice and glycine based oral rehydration solution (ORS) and the control group received the WHO recommended glucoses based ORS. The electrolyte composition of both solutions were identical but the study solution contained 50 grams of pop rice powder and 8.3 grams of glycine instead of 20 grams of glucose per liter of solution. The study solution was found to diminish the oral solution intake significantly (p .05). The diarrheal stool output was less in the study group but not significantly so. The duration of diarrhea was similar in both groups. These results were no better than those obtained previously with rice based ORS alone. (authors)
