Power system reliability enhancement and generation cost reduction in presence of variable resources

The intermittent and uncertainty nature of variable resources rises the need to investigate the effect of the technical operation aspects of power system operation and transmission lines constrains, on estimating the penetration level of variable resources that enhances the economic and operation aspects of power system. The Incorporation of these resources into systems rises the need to evaluate the expected output power of wind and PV system and their contribution to the total generation cost reduction and system reliability enhancement. In this paper, a method to model the output of a PV system and a wind power is presented. The proposed method captures both the intermittency of the input source and generation unit failure. The proposed method is demonstrated on the IEEE RTS. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to find the proper locations of the intermittent resources in order to enhance the system reliability. Results are presented, analyzed, and thoroughly discussed.
