The Croatian experience of steel slag application in civil engineering

In India, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Jalna, has been declared as the steel-producing zone in Maharashtra. In Jalna MIDC, about 40 small- and large-scale industries waste about 1000 MT iron slag daily. An extensive experimental analysis was done to find the various strengths of steel slag, eg, when used as aggregates in roads. The objective of this chapter is to identify the mechanical characteristics of steel slag for using it in the construction of roads, which will be helpful to replace natural aggregates. As slag is an inert material, it cannot take part in chemical reactions during rainy season. It can be effectively used in the water-bound macadam roads and also in flexible as well as rigid pavements. But it will be economical only if used in the nearest areas to the production site; because when the transportation cost increases, economy of the construction decreases. This study identified various mechanical properties of steel slag such as abrasion value (25.66%), impact value (19.90%), crushing value (5.20%), specific gravity (2.71), maximum dry density (2.39g/cc), optimum moisture content (9.67%), water absorption (0.93%). There are strong practical implications for both practitioners and academicians for using steel slag in the construction of roads. Also researchers can find the use of steel slag in various areas of civil engineering, such as wastewater treatment, water treatment, again as aggregates in concrete.
