Safety of Road-Railway Grade Crossings

Regarded from the traffic aspect, the road-railway grade crossing are usually considered as a special type of intersection. The reason lies in the fact that in most cases railway traffic has full priority over road traffic. Therefore, these crossings are most often designed also in such a way as to meet primarily the needs of the railway traffic, unlike other types of intersections, where there is a tendency towards a compromise between individual traffic branches. In order to improve the safety at the crossings, it is necessary to implement a series of measures that would be adjusted to every single crossing and it is necessary to take into the consideration the specific characteristics of each crossing, with the aim of improving the safety level at the respective crossing, thus resulting in a reduced number of traffic accidents and also in the reduction of the consequences of these accidents.
