Applications of Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Thermal energy storage (TES) systems are much preferred in many engineering applications, which have the ability to bridge the gap between energy supply and energy demand. Cooling or heating energy redistribution requirements can be effectively met using TES systems. The peak load demand can be shifted to off-peak hours by utilizing stored heat energy from TES units. From the perspective of heat storage and release capabilities, the latent functional phase change materials exhibit good phase transition characteristics compared to sensible and thermochemical energy stores. Thus, the utilization of latent TES systems (either in active or passive modes of operation) is very common in a variety of heat transfer applications. The value-added renewable energy integration with TES systems offers a huge potential for performing low energy design and opens a gateway toward the development of a sustainable future.
