Vertical Water Entry of Finite Cones - a Numerical Calculation,

Abstract : In the report a numerical solution of the impact phase during vertical water-entry of a finite cone is presented. The hydrodynamic code, MACWET, which calculates the solutions, utilizes an extension of the marker and cell method. The following examples are included: (1) a constant velocity cylinder impacting at 131 ft/sec.; (2) a three inch (radius), 90 degrees steel cone falling from rest with its vertex barely submerged in the water; (3) a three inch, 90 degrees steel cone impacting at 131 ft/sec.; and (4) a 136 lb., nine inch, 90 degrees cone impacting at 40 ft/sec. (The code is not limited to 90 degrees cones). The numerical results are compared with available experimental data. (Author)
