Geomembrane landfill liners in the real world

Abstract This paper provides an introduction to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes, emphasizing some practical aspects essential for the successful installation of such liners at landfill sites. Installation procedures are discussed, including quality of the sub-grade, methods of laying panels, seaming techniques and destructive and non-destructive methods of testing. The need for construction quality assurance (CQA) is highlighted as a means to minimize leakage and to ensure that geomembrane liners function as specified throughout the life of the landfill facility.
