Recent advances in the physiology and pathophysiology of potassium excretion.

Recent micropuncture data have confirmed that the distal convoluted tubule plays a leading role in potassium secretion. Earlier concepts of a 1:1 exchange between sodium and potassium or hydrogen ion must be modified in light of recent findings. Plasma potassium levels may change the rate of renin secretion, and total body potassium depletion may alter the ability to concentrate and acidify the urine.
