Impact of land use dynamics on land surface temperature in Jharia coalfield

This study attempts to show the impact of changing land use land cover (LULC) on land surface temperature (LST) in Jharia Coalfield using satellite thermal infrared data. The refined LST was derived by versatile LST retrieval algorithm using atmospheric correction parameters and improved land surface emissivity (LSE) model for two years i.e. 2005 and 2013. It was observed that LST increased at the rate of 1.05°C and significant differences in LST exist over different LULC units. Increase impervious land including barren land and settlement resulted in increase in the overall mean LST. This showed that rising LST is strongly correlated to LULC changes.
