Multispan Balanced Suspension Bridge

The need for providing long spans over large stretches of water has prompted a new bridge system being proposed. Called the “multispan balanced suspension bridge,” it consists of a number of main spans similar to those of a classical suspension bridge but with its cables anchored at the top of a braced tower, which in turn, is supported on a novel pier of cylindrical shape. The key features of its design and construction are discussed. An example demonstrates the effectiveness of the new bridge system.
