Automatic Off-Body Grid Generation for Domains of Arbitrary Size

A fully automatic method for the management and generation of off-body grid systems is presented. The method product is a set of structured uniform Cartesian grids that overset curvilinear near-body grids and extend to the domain far-field boundaries. The order inherent to the method effectively de couples domain size and total number of grid points. Attributes of the method enable efficient moving-body and adaptive grid refinement within the context of overset structured grids. Basic concepts and algorithms of the method are described. The resulting general off-body grid generation scheme is defined. The method is applied to a set of geometrically complex three-dimensional applications including a helicopter dog-fight and an accident involving a military aircraft.
