Velocity Model Building From Waveform Tomography of Band Limited Reflection Seismic Data

We propose a methodology to obtain the low frequency background velocity model through a variant of full waveform inversion using band limited acoustic seismic data. This method, combined with traveltime picking using a dynamic warping technique, alleviates, to a certain extent, the requirement of very close starting model by traditional full waveform inversion (FWI). The result can be used as the starting model for conventional FWI so that the full potential of FWI technology can be achieved. We tested this method on a synthetic data set from a four layer model. The results are encouraging.
