Bit error rate and noise in S-band TDFA-amplified 10-Gb/s optical transmission

We report on the measurements and calculations of bit error rate (BER) and noise figure (NF) in an up-conversion-pumped thulium-doped fiber amplifier for the S band. Error-free transmission (BER < 10−9) was achieved, and good agreement between measured and calculated power penalties was obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
