NPI-Licensing and Focus Movement

Theories of focus association differ with respect to whether or not the focused con stituent in ( lb) moves to associate with ·only ' . 'Only' is an operator that takes two arguments, a property p(x) and a focus argument f. The proposition p(j) is called the prejacent of a sentence involving ·only ' . Only(j) (p(x) ) presupposes the prejacent p(j ) and asserts that all proposi tions of the form p( a) that are not already entailed by the prejacent are false, where a is an element of the same semantic type as f 1
