Design Options for Advanced Arrival Management in the SESAR Context

The authors discuss the Advanced Arrival Management (AAMAN) option of speed schedule/route modification, also known as Speed And Route Advisor, or SARA, along with SARA’s relation to Required Time of Arrival (RTA), a complementary AAMAN option. The purpose of the SARA function is to deliver advisories on speed or routing to controllers to better achieve planned arrival times in order to facilitate more efficient terminal area operations. Improved terminal area operations will allow introduction of precision area navigation routes in the terminal area. Ultimately this should contribute to lower controller workload, improved flight, while decreasing environmental impacts. The SARA trial led to substantial fuel savings for Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The authors further discuss the SARA concept with future integrated air/ground datalink and full-capability ground automation.
