Classification and Clustering in Spatial and Image Data

Problems of classification form a large part of the literature on pattern recognition, and of this a large subset is devoted to problems of classification and recognition in image data. After a brief introduction to the area, we describe two problems which we are currently working on, both involving the application of formal statistical methods to the classification of image data. These are the clustering of galaxies into types and the classification of images nematodes (small unsegmented worms) by species. Bayesian methods are used, incorporating spatial stochastic processes encapsulating the structure known a priori to be present.
