Abstract Metals play a crucial role in a wide variety of organic syntheses and biological processes1. Directly or indirectly, their usefulness depends on their propensity to undergo electron transfer and/or form coordination compounds with appropriate reactivity and geometry. The unique role of transition metals in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis has been recently reviewed2.
