Multifunction System Based on a State-of-the-Art Microcontroller

This paper presents the hardware and software design of a new point of sale terminal. It is a multifunction system with a wide range of functionalities: state-of-the-art user interface, a host of communication possibilities (RS232, Ethernet, GSM, RTB MODEM) etc. The core of the whole development is the IMX21 microcontroller which allows the system design to be simplified. The Linux operating system is used due to the complexity of the hardware systems and the fact that it has to be reconfigured for different functionalities. The peripheral drivers have therefore been programmed. The result is a totally portable, lowconsumption system capable of performing many functions.
