Spread spectrum FDMA over high speed TDM transmission system for multimedia satellite communications

It is desired to realize high speed portable wireless terminals that offer a rapid network access anytime and anywhere. Satellite communications have the potential to realize such terminals because of its wide coverage area. This paper proposes a superposed spread spectrum FDMA (SS-FDMA) signaling over a high speed TDM signal transmission scheme to realize A4 size portable user terminals. Feasibility studies of a multimedia satellite communication system employing the proposed scheme are also described. Under present satellite performance and interference conditions, it is clarified that the system can achieve the following performance: the SS-FDMA signal speed for the access link is about 9.6 kbit/s, the TDM signal speed for the supply link is about 8 Mbit/s and the capacity of simultaneous SS-FDMA signal transmitting terminals is about 256.
