Monolithic Pillars in Canaan: Reconsidering the Date of the High Place at Gezer

Abstract Monolithic pillars seem to be part of the landscape of Early Bronze Age Palestine and Transjordan. The MBIIC date assigned to the Gezer monoliths thus contradicts the much consistent chronology assigned to the 'monoliths phenomenon' in Canaan. This paper re-evaluates the fragmentary remains unearthed by the Hebrew Union College expedition in pockets of debris left undisturbed by Macalister next to and below the monoliths. Accordingly, the initial date of construction of the Gezer alignment is reconsidered.
